Virat King Kohli

In the last 5 chases in T20's prior to this game, Kohli was averaging 106. And today, in this Ind vs Aus World T20 match, after an injured Yuvraj worked to 21 and was dismissed by Faulkner in the 14th over, it was over to the captain (Dhoni) and vice-captain. With 39 of 18 deliveries required, it seemed like a hairy end was approaching. The next thirteen balls read 4 4 6 2 1 2 0 4 4 0 4 4 4.Of these, Dhoni played only 2 and scored 6, including the winning boundary. A deviation from the normal punch in the air and raised bat celebration, Kohli sank to the ground as the ball crossed the line, testifying how this chase had tested his temperament, but he managed to come out on top.

Early Life

Kohli was born in Delhi, the youngest of three siblings, and had a passion for cricket from the age of just three. He also played gully cricket and it was then that the neighbors suggested that professional training should be given to Kohli. The West Delhi Cricket Academy was established around this time, in 1998, and Kohli was among the first students there. Not only was Kohli good at cricket, he was an outstanding student and his teachers loved him.

To become a good player, you need talent. To become a great player, you need an attitude like Kohli. – Sunil Gavaskar

Start of the Cricket life

In October 2002, Kohli began his formal cricketing career with the Polly Umrigar Trophy with the Delhi under 15 teams. With an average of 34.40, he scored 72 runs and was the top run getter for his side. He became the team's captain for the same trophy next year and scored a whopping 390 runs in 5 innings. Under his leadership, the Delhi under 15 teams have seen a lot of wins.

In 2006, in India under 19 teams, Kohli was selected for the England tour. The Indians went on to win the series and he performed well.

Kohli made his first-class cricket debut for Delhi in the same year and scored 10 in his debut innings. His father died from a brain attack at that period. His personal tragedy was superseded by Kohli's devotion to cricket and his professionalism. A day after the demise of his mum, he decided to play for his team against Karnataka. Kohli then went on to play the T-20 format on a youth contract for the Delhi team, which won him recognition and soon a spot in the Royal Challengers Bangalore team for $30,000.

The Indian Cricket Team Journey

Kohli was brought to the Indian Cricket ODI team for Srilanka's trip and the Champions Trophy to Pakistan in 2008. At 19 years of age, he scored his first fifty in the fourth match. Kohli was taken for the unofficial test tour to Australia as a substitute for an injured Shikhar Dhawan, where he batted once and scored 49.During India's England tour in 2008, although Kohli was a part of the squad, due to the involvement of Tendulkar and Sehwag, he did not get a chance to play in the team. He was also picked in Australia in 2009 for the four-team Emerging Players Tournament, where his success amazed the world.

In most of the series that India played around this time, Kohli began to be taken, but was taken more as a substitute for injured players rather than as a permanent and indispensable player. However, the feat with the IPL continued where Kohli continued to play extremely well and win accolades.

In 2010, Kohli found a chance to play in all the 5 matches of the tri-nation ODI tournament in Bangladesh after Tendulkar was rested from the squad. In the match against Bangladesh, when India was struggling at 51/3 while chasing 297, Kohli scored 91 to help India win the match. Kohli played extremely well to become the series' top runner and became the world's third batsman to score two ODI centuries before his 22nd birthday, Sachin Tendulkar and Suresh Raina being the first two. He was praised for his excellent performance, especially by the Indian captain, M.S. Dhoni.

In the tri-series against Srilanka and Zimbabwe in 2010, Kohli was appointed as vice-captain himself and there was no looking back. In ODI cricket, he became the quickest Indian batsman to hit 1000 runs. Though he often struggled with his form, his perseverance won him a permanent place in the Indian squad. He played in the International World Cup and was one of the main players who steered India to victory after 28 years.

Kohli, however, due to his high run rates, received the tag of an ODI player and was not thought to be a test player by cricket experts. He proved everyone wrong when he made 132 on Australia's test tour in 2011. With his good performances and aggressive style, when Dhoni retired from the 5 day format in the 2014/15 series against Aus, he was unanimously selected as the captain for tests.

The records

With the third batsman in the world scoring 1000 ODI runs before turning 22, Kohli began a series of records. After Dhoni was injured and declared unfit to play, Kohli became the Indian cricket team captain for the triangular series in the West Indies in 2013. Kohli scored his first hundred as captain in the second game of the tournament, hitting 102 off 83 balls. Kohli hit the third fastest ODI century in the seven-match ODI series against Australia, hitting the 100 run mark in 61 balls. Kohli equaled Viv Richard's record of being the fastest batsman to get 5000 runs in ODI in the two-match test series against West Indies, memorable as Tendulkar's last test series.

His performance was attributed by Virat Kohli to his coach Rajkumar Sharma and the advice he got from former Indian captain Bishan Singh Bedi. Kohli could not be swept off the ground by such an incredible feat of achievement. He remains a very humble person, a real role model for India's young people. Recently, he has been rated 8th in ESPN’s top 10 most popular sportsmen in the world being preceded by sportsmen like Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Roger Federer etc. And this is where he belongs
