MYTH ABOUT NORTH KOREA

LET'S BE FAIR. WE'VE ALL HEARD THEM, BUT SOME OF THESE ARE REALLY BAD. THESE ARE 4 NORTH KOREA MYTHS AND WHY THEY ARE Absolutely FALSE!

Myth 1: North Korea is just about Kim Jong Un and nuclear weapons.

North Korea is more than Kim Jong-un and nuclear missiles, to be sure. It is home to 25 million people who are subjected to one of the most brutal regimes in the world. The focus of the media is on Kim Jong Un and nuclear weapons. However, the people of North Korea and their stories remind us that it is a nation full of promise and hope. Here you can read about the people of North Korea.

Myth 2: The entire population of North Korea has been brainwashed.

The dictatorship wants the world to see goosestepping soldiers and videos of hysterical crowds cheering for the Kim dynasty. However, it is by no means the complete frame. Also the regime's tight control does not prevent North Koreans from becoming more conscious of their surroundings.

North Koreans have new outlets to the outside thanks to new technologies and smuggled foreign products in the Jangmadang (markets). And this unfettered access to illicit international media is eroding regime support. North Koreans binge-watch South Korean dramas and Hollywood films just like everyone else—even if they don't have access to the internet! There is a way where there is a will!

‍Myth 3: North Korea is hopeless and unchanging.

Yeah, the citizens of North Korea are subjected to the world's most oppressive regime. They are, however, upending the status quo and questioning the regime's hold on power at the grassroots. They're starting companies, and those who are able to leave the country are sending money and information back. The changes they're bringing in are permanent, and they're small steps toward reform and opening up within North Korea. Time and time again, North Koreans prove their resourcefulness and resilience in a system that has failed them.

Myth 4: There's nothing I can do to help the people of North Korea.

That's incorrect! Though it might seem that North Korea is a problem too large for any one person to solve, you can still help North Korean refugees today by taking any of the following steps:

1. Make a donation to help finance rescue efforts.

2. Witness a real-life rescue operation!

3. Form a rescue team in your school or community to raise money and raise awareness about the North Korean crisis.

4. Build a Facebook fundraiser to support refugees by raising funds in your neighbourhood.

5. Enter the global campaign for North Koreans by following us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube,
