Cyclone Amphan
The 4th was in the middle of India. Extended Lockdown phase (from 18 May to 31 May 2020) on 20 May 20 afternoon due to Corona Virus COVID-19, Amphan, a super cyclone hit the eastern Indian city of Kolkata and six districts of the state of West Bengal.
The eastern Indian town of Kolkata was devastated by a powerful cyclone that killed at least 86 people in the districts and towns of Kolkata. The city experienced such a ferocious storm for the first time in centuries.
On Wednesday, Amphan made landfall, lashing coastal areas with ferocious rain and wind. As projected, with gales and rain, it entered the city at about 2-30Pm. I was trying to see from the side of the balcony where there was less wind pressure. The front balcony door and window on the main road had too much wind pressure. With so much sound and rain, the heavy wind made us sit inside the room. We heard breaking window panes somewhere in such a scenario and then heard a great sound of something falling. He walked out to the side balcony, trying to see what it was. A PVC pipe was found to be uprooted from our next building and came to our area flying and fell on my car. The pipe was broken into pieces, but apart from some scratches, the car was not damaged. Then I saw a large branch of our 50-year-old tree, losing battling with the mighty cyclone, breaking down with a sound to the ground. At around 7.00 pm, the wind velocity reached its height. Which was reported as an hourly 133 km. The cyclone passed from the city to the North East and Bangladesh at around 7-30pm.
Kolkata was destroyed during the 5 hours of Amphan's involvement, with thousands of trees uprooted in the gales, electricity and telephone lines brought down and houses flattened. Many of the roads in Kolkata have been flooded and 14 million people have been left without electricity. The storm is the first super cyclone since 1999 to develop in the Bay of Bengal. It was still rated as a very strong cyclone, but its winds had weakened by the time it struck.
Corona virus limitations have impeded emergency and relief operations. Mass evacuations were made more difficult by Covid-19 and social-distancing measures, with shelters unable to be used to maximum capacity. The majority of people were at home when the cyclone hit. Due to the corona virus pandemic, Kolkata and the rest of India are under lockdown.
After the above Facebook post, Internet service was interrupted for more than a week and, thank God, restored yesterday. So we experienced a double lockdown. In the city itself, 15K trees were uprooted. Internet courtesy photo
